Kentucky Riders Dominate on Hilly Ferdinand Course
It was time to crown the king of the mountains... at least as close to
mountains as Indiana can get. Ferdinand State Forest's demanding steep
sustained climbs put riders to the test. The race was DINO's most hilly
course and also the furthest south. The southern location drew many Kentucky
riders, three of which claimed the Expert/Pro Men's top podium spots.
Anthony Slowinski (Scheller's / Rumpke) worked his way back into the lead
after a missed turn to win the top division at 2:02:52. Greg Dunn (Lindsey
Wilson College / Bike Peddlar) and Daniel Matheny (Wood & Wave) were
in close proximity all race long, finishing just over two minutes off the
lead.
Heather Randolph (Moore Restoration) secured the Expert Women's 2004 DINO
Series Championship with her 5th win of 6 races this year. Gina Kenny (Team
Extreme) took second place.
Andrew Messer (Bicycle Station) proved his climbing strength in Sport Men,
claiming the overall win. His finish put him ahead of James Everts (Bicycle
Works) and Sam Rhoads (Bicycle Station). Leesa Stefano (Burn Energy Drink)
put a large time gap on the rest of the Sport Women, including Jo Herald
(mtbchick.com), the current series leader.
The Sport Class winners were rewarded with great prizes donated by the
Old Capitol Bike Shop in Corydon IN. Old Capitol also provided free mechanical
service for any rider needing assistance.
Tim Casady (Zionsville Mudhens) clenched the overall 2004 series title
for Beginner Men, with a win Saturday over a 40-rider field including second
place Michael Dotlich (Hodson's Bay Co.) and third Chris Hansen. Casady
has announced his move into Sport for the next race. Making a family sweep,
Casady's son Joe climbed to a 7-minute margin of victory in the overall
Junior field. Eric Harris was next behind Casady, winning the 13-14 year
old division just ahead of Brad Nelson.
Other winners included Jason Upp (Clydesdale), Karin Bridwell (Beginner
Women), and Chad Hoyt (Intro).

Shakedown Starts for Point Standings
Two races remain in the DINO Mountain Bike Series. A lot can change in
the series standings. Only two of the overall titles are locked in - and
nearly all of the age group awards are still up for grabs. Each rider's
six best scores count for the total. This means after the next race (#7)
some riders will advance substantially.
PayDirt bonus points can give you a 20-point boost, but you need to act
quickly! The deadline to receive PayDirt bonus points has been extended
through September 12, to encourage you to attend the IMBA Trail Care Crew
in Indianapolis on Sept 11 and 12, or trail work at Portage's Imagination
Glen, Sept 11 and 12 at 8 am, as well as a workday September 11 at Versailles
State Park.
For more information visit www.imba.com or www.hmba.org
PayDirt bonus points must be received by Sept 12... NO EXCEPTIONS. Points
will be posted by Sept 13 so there are no surprises at the series final
race, Sept 18.
Below are the category leaders, and comments:
EM - David Wagoner: Solid lead, but could be upset by Paul Arlinghaus or
Chris Bowman
EW - Heather Randolph: Locked in the title with 5 wins and a third.
SM - David Raber: This category is wide open. Sam Rhoads or Andrew Messer
could easily grab the overall spot when low scores begin to be dropped.
All age group titles are up for grabs. 35-39 is an expecially close race.
SW - Jo Herald: Could be caught by Anne Sheets or Leesa Stefano.
BM - Tim Casady: Locked in to the overall win - the battle now is for the
age group titles, several of which are close.
BW - Karen Griffiths: Solid lead, but a DNF or no-show could allow several
other riders to win, including Melody Lowder, now 2nd.
J - Zach Edwards: Joe Casady and Quinn Gray will likely take over once
Edwards lowest score drops.
C - Jason Upp: Could be beaten by Rich Lennex, Mark Adams, or possibly
Trevor Miller
