Pro/Expert Race
Lacey Gonzalez - Shirks has been focusing all of her time on school
lately and is not happy with her fitness level. However, this highly
focused young woman powered her way around one of the toughest
courses in the region and won 1st Place Overall & Pro Women.
She raced the day before in the Cat Classic, fell and hurt her
knee and was not able to get off and run (which is one of her strong
points) during this race. She was able to hold off the super fast
new addition to the Trek/VW East Coast team - Caitlyn Tuel. Caitlyn
took second place Pro Women just 48 seconds back. Theresa Richardson
- Cannondale who last week won one of the toughest races on the
East Coast was way off of her game for this race due to hydration
problems (see
her interview). Theresa placed third 18:03 back showing how
a pro hangs in there and finishes even on an off day. Tammy Coleman
- Gung Ho Bikes won top honors in the Expert Women 34 &under
race. Tammy won 1st Place Sport Women 34 &under at the Michaux
Maximus last week and decided to move up to Expert and also placed
first! Erica Miller - Wissahickon came in second 2 minutes back.
Chris Eatough - Trek/VW East Coast is a man never
to be underestimated. Chris won 1st Place Overall racer & Pro
Men. However, for most of the race it looked like Brandon Ott -
Tailwind........ the man in orange....... was going to win the
race against the 24 hour Solo World Champion. At one point in the
race, Brandon was close to two minutes ahead of Chris. I found
myself getting excited and rooting for the underdog (sorry Chris)
as lap after lap, he was holding his lead. In the first set of
singletrack after the start of the race, it was Brandon Ott - Tailwind,
Greg Marini - Bike Doctor, and Chris Eatough - Trek/VW East Coast.
Greg slipped coming out of the first section of singletrack and
Chris lost Brandon's wheel. Brandon gained more and more speed
and Chris did not see him again until the LAST LAP going into the
tunnel. With Brandon in his sights............ Chris came back
to life and in the last three sections of singletrack and the open
fields pulled away into the stratosphere of world class efforts
taking first place by a whopping 1minute and 27 seconds. Don't
ever bet against this guy........... for that matter I wouldn't
bet against any of these three top notch gentlemen....... Brandon
put in a wonderful performance placing second........ 1:27back
and Greg Marini - Bike Doctor was third Pro Men 4:03 back.
