Interview with Dave Radziewicz
Date: July 25, 1999
Event: Escape From Granogue XC
Class: Senior
Category: Expert/Pro
Length: 18 miles
Time: 1:24:17
Conditions: Sunny and HOT - Fast hard packed course - loose dry powder in some spots
Bike: Jamis

MBR.com: Are you happy with your number ONE finish?

Dave: Yes I am.

MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained?

Dave: Probably about 12 to 15 hours a week last week being a rest week. I usually go in a month long cycle three weeks regular training and then a rest week which is light riding every day not taking time off the bike but just doing about half of what I normally do.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race?

Dave: No, the course was well marked. The heat was maybe a little bit of a problem but everybody had to suffer through that. The course was well marked, fast and a lot of fun.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck?

Dave: I guess I could say, kind of luck because John MacInnis who was leading the race shortly after I attacked him got a flat about 30 seconds after I attacked. I don't know how things would have turned out had he not flatted, I don't like to say anything like that, I don't want to get myself in trouble.

MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish?

Dave: Yeah, I was content to sit back and let someone else do the work for the first half of the race. I like to do that, see how everybody else is riding and then when you get to some nasty climbs or some steep stuff then I like to attack on that kind of terrain. It worked out for me today. I've become a little bit more of a patient racer then what I used to be. I used to like to go right from the gun but I like feeling strong at the finish now too.

MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

MBR.com: How do you rate the course, did you like the course?

Dave: I liked this kind of course. I liked the really tough challenging steep climbs and I like the fact that you climb for about a minute really steep and hard and then you get a little bit of a break to recover. You can put the hammer down on some of the descents. The woods single track was fun. I liked the speed that you could carry on most of the course which made it a lot more fun than pounding over rocks that you can only do about five miles per hour over.

MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run?

Dave: Yes, the promoter did a very good job. You couldn't ask to mark the course any better. It was well run, just a little bit late at the start but what race don't you go to that that happens? The awards were timely. So, it made me happy and made me want to come back!

MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place?

Dave: $150.

MBR.com: If conditions are the same, could you go faster next year?

Dave: Depends on who shows up. I ride the race based on my competition not time. If conditions were the same, probably.

MBR.com: When did you put the hammer down?

Dave: About half way through the race. Right before - it was in the woodsy section after the motocross track area. That's when I put the hammer down and just kept it going up the really steep climb that most people were getting off and walking. I rode up there in a pretty hard gear and got a good gap going that way.

MBR.com: So you made it up all three times?

Dave: Yeah I made it up all three times.

MBR.com: In a big gear?

Dave: Yes, granny gear and like four down.

MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

Dave: I actually took a rest week last week after the race I did last week at Michaeu. It was a three hour race in 100 degree temperatures. I had also raced quite a few weeks in a row before that so I needed a little bit of a break.

MBR.com: Plus that is an incredibly difficult course! How did you do there?

Dave: Tied for the win. My team mate Kyle Dixon and I won the race. He caught me with ten minutes left in the race, and we were both pretty much shot so we decided to just ride in together. We had a pretty commanding lead on second place or the next guy behind us.
