MBR.com: Has your team raced as a team before this race? Doug: No. MBR.com: Did the team do anything special to prepare for this race? Doug: No, not really. MBR.com: How many laps did each member do during the race? Doug: I did 6, everybody else did 5. MBR.com: Who had the fastest lap times on your team? Doug: I'm not sure, the first three laps we were all right around 1 hour. A couple of us broke the one hour mark, I think I might have done a 58 minute and somebody else might have done a 58, or 59 minute lap. All of us did real close to the same our first couple of laps. MBR.com: Was everyone on time for their next lap in the transition area? Doug: Yes, even when I had the bad lap and I was in there for like an hour...oh no, actually I did a real good lap in the morning. My first light lap at around 6 in the morning I was so fast that I thought they're not going to be there when I get back cause I told them I would be around 1:10 - 1:15. I was thinking that if they are not there, I'm going to go out and do another lap myself and get that over with so I won't have to go out later. But when I got there he was right there ready and waiting for me. Everyone was ready every time! MBR.com: Was the team strong from start to finish? Doug: Yes, but we had a few slow laps in the middle of the night. My light broke after three miles and I did one lap |
without a light, with just that little squeeze thing that they give you. I broke my sprocket one lap. It slowed us down a little. Another guy had a slower lap (an hour and 25 minute I think), but other than that we were pretty consistent the whole way. Our last two laps were just a little over an hour, about as fast as we were starting out with. MBR.com: Did you have a good support crew? Doug: We didn't really have a support crew. We had friends there but I don't know if you would call that a support crew. MBR.com: Did everyone get along in the heat of competition?Doug: Yes, everyone got along real good. We were just out having fun. MBR.com: Did anyone change clothes, shower, or nap during the race? Doug: Yes I think Bob, and Doug Finley both showered once or twice. I changed clothes maybe around 11 o'clock at night. I wore the same sweaty clothes for the first three laps. I didn't know that there would be showers available so I didn't bring a lot of extra clothes. MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck? Doug: When my light broke, I'd say that was unusual. It was just a bad connection in the wire. I didn't know about it, I had borrowed my friend's battery. Also my middle sprocket broke right in half on the second night lap, so I did the whole lap on the big ring which I guess wasn't good luck. Other than that, not really any good luck. |
MBR.com: How do you rate
the course?
Doug: The course I thought was great. It was very technical, the first lap was great, we just flew, then it seemed to get tougher as the night went on. The rocks were wet with dew, your legs were tired, it seemed tougher but it was a real nice course. I thought it was very good. MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run? Doug: Yes, I've never done any race like that before but I thought everything went real well. MBR.com: If you could do the race again, would you do anything differently? Doug: I would probably bring some extra clothes. I'd like to go with the same team. I'd also like to be a little more mentally prepared. I didn't really know what it was going to be like and I know that we could do as well as we did and probably better. Other than that I don't think we would do anything differently. MBR.com: Is there anything you would like to add? Doug: I thought it was a lot of fun. I wasn't expecting it to be so much fun, I thought it would be brutal, but I went out my last lap Sunday morning and went almost as fast as my first lap, so....I felt good about it and we did a lot better than we thought. We could have done one more lap if we were competing for the second or third fastest team overall. Maybe then we would have gone out for another lap but at that point, it wasn't really worth it. |
