SUPER SPONSOR

Interview with Justin Thompson-Trek/Volkswagen
Date: July 11, 1999
Event: Fairhill Classic XC
Class: Junior
Category: Expert
Length: 28 miles
Time: 2:02 - 13.38 mph average speed!
Conditions: Sunny and HOT - Fast hard packed course
Bike: Trek 8900

MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained?

Justin: Between 20 and 30 depending on what races are up ahead. Sometimes over 30 hours a week. On average I would say about 26 hours a week.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race?

Justin: No, everything went pretty smooth. I wasn't feeling so hot cause I was in the Katie Compton club getting back late from the Fish concert the night before, so I only got about 4 hours of sleep. Other than that it was a nice day.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck?

Justin: Not really. Just went out there and had fun. Not too much pressure. It was a nice local race where I knew the trails and everything.

MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish?

Justin: Yeah. The Juniors started with the Veteran and Master Experts and I led that whole pack going into the woods. I just stayed in the lead and didn't look back. Just kept going.

MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

Justin: Leading up the race I just spun easy a couple days before the race. From prior races I'm pretty used to the whole mountain bike race routine but this is the first mountain bike race I have done since Seven Springs. I did some road biking for about a month. That got me off track a little bit. This race was a good warm-up for going out West.

MBR.com: How do you rate the course?

Justin: A+. Point to points are awesome. Fairhill has some of the best trails in the area so... definitely an awesome course.

MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run?

Justin: Very. Everything went off on time. I heard a couple of things about some of the Experts getting lost, but as far as I'm concerned that's their fault. That happens everywhere when people aren't paying attention. The course was well marked and there were spectators cheering you on. Plenty of water stops. Everything was great!

MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place?

Justin: $150.

MBR.com: If conditions are the same, could you go faster next year?

Justin: Definitely. Definitely, I don't think I'd go to the Fish concert again the night before. If I went into the race with a little bit more sleep I think I could have gone faster. I could have gone faster this year, but when you're out front you're just relaxing. Next year I'll go for the OVERALL Expert win!

MBR.com: Anything you would like to add?

Justin: Fairhill is a great race and I'll be back next year hopefully.
