| Editor's note: Leanne has a very demanding job as a veterinarian and hardly has time to train. To win first place in the heat on what may be the TOUGHEST mountain bike race course in Delaware is a noteworthy achievement. She is an inspiration to all of us trying to train while unfortunately having to handle other responsibilities simultaneously. | |||||||||

MBR.com: Are you happy with your number ONE finish? Leanne: Sure. MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained? Leanne: The last two months probably on average 6 to 8 hours a week. MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race? Leanne: I definitely felt the heat. I was a little disappointed with my time, but given the heat and it was a tough course .... MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck? Leanne: I think it was a small field. That helps sometimes. It's easier to mark people and know how you're doing. The laps helped get a better prospective of how you were doing. MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish? Leanne: The first lap I definitely felt the heat. By the second lap I was actually felling better and I felt like I almost finished stronger than I originally started. MBR.com: When did you put the hammer down? Leanne: I really tried to push it when you got out into the open fields. I figured the faster I got through the open fields the better I would be and there were some open areas where you could do the big gear stuff! MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race? Leanne: I tried to ride the week before in a little bit more technical stuff because again, I believe the course was a bit more challenging than most that are run in this area. |
MBR.com:
How do you rate the course?
Leanne: Excellent. I thought it was challenging, yet not to the point where I thought it was dangerous. The thing I liked about it was that there was a lot of climbing, a lot of areas where you really felt like you were working. MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run?Leanne: Yes, I thought the course was very well marked, that the marshaling was excellent, that there were people posted along the course at the sights where there needed to be people posted. I never felt deserted on the course at all. MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place? Leanne: I got a Specialized wireless computer and Gore brake cables. MBR.com: If conditions are the same, could you go faster next year? Leanne: Yeah, I definitely think I could push it more. That first lap I didn't feel good and I think I was acclimating to the heat. By the second lap I was in the groove of things. You have a much better idea of what to expect. Like where you can put the hammer down and where you're going to loose a little bit of time. So I think if the course is at all similar then I think I could definitely go faster next year weather permitting. MBR.com: Is there anything you would like to add? Leanne: I thought it was a very well organized race and I was really pleased to participate despite the heat in honor of Andy (Andrew Mein). He had helped me out a couple of times at the shop. He was a really really great guy! |
