Category: Independent Racer

Editor's Note: Lee trains on a stairmaster during the week, riding only on weekends, has been riding mountain bikes since 1991, but had never ridden at night or raced mountain bikes before this race!!
Plus she could have done another lap being just one lap away from the overall Men's winner - good thing she slept for eight hours and got bored riding that 10 mile loop.
MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish?

Lee: Yeah, physically I was fine.

MBR.com: Did you have a good support crew?

Lee: My husband was my support crew but he was riding too. He did solo as well so we barely had the chance to support each other.

MBR.com: What did you eat during the race?

Lee: Pop-tarts and butter and jelly sandwiches. The cutting edge of nutrition. I didn't have one cliff bar or any of that kind of stuff.

MBR.com: Did you change clothes, shower, or nap during the race?

Lee: I took a shower before bed, slept for 8 hours and put on clean clothes.

MBR.com: That was after eight laps?

Lee: After six laps.

MBR.com: How many batteries did you go thru on your night ride?

Lee: I never even had to recharge the one. That was the incredible thing about Jet Designs.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race?

Lee: Nope! Thank God.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck?

Lee: Yeah, I guess I got lucky because I had no problems, not even a flat.

MBR.com: How long have you been racing mountain bikes?

Lee: This was my first race.

MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

Lee: No. I went to bed early the night before.

MBR.com: Before this race what is the longest distance or number of hours you have ridden in one day?

Lee: 50 miles. That was because we were lost.

MBR.com: How much actual riding time did you get in during the race?

Lee: The two laps in the dark I did in two hours. That's four hours and then the other 8 laps I did in an hour and a half. It had to be 16 hours total cause the rest of the time I was sleeping.

MBR.com: How many miles did you go in 24 hours?

Lee: 100 miles. I came in at 11:50 am and could have done another lap if I had to. Since I knew that I had won no matter what I didn't bother. I got tired of riding in circles. It was so much more mental than it was physical. Mentally I was like, "this is stupid".

MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained on average?

Lee: Everyday for two hours and then I ride on weekends. So two hours during the week, that's ten hours and probably 4 hours each weekend day.

MBR.com: Is this mountain biking or roadbiking, or...?

Lee: Stairmaster during the week. I have a Stairmaster in the basement, the good kind that doesn't let you cheat - where you have to put your arms up in the air.

MBR.com: How do you rate the course?

Lee: I thought it was kind of easy because I love climbing hills. I think the hills got to a lot of people. It wasn't that technical and I was thankful for that cause I know Allamuchy could be a lot more technical than what they took us on.

MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run?

Lee: Yeah, it was great because everyone was having fun. There wasn't too much competitiveness going on so it made it a lot more relaxed.

MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place?

Lee: A picture frame.

MBR.com: If you could do the race again, would you do anything differently?

Lee: Maybe I would have pushed myself to do that 11th lap. It was just so mental I was just sick of riding at that point.

MBR.com: Is there anything you would like to add?

Lee: It can be a very enjoyable experience. People who are thinking about doing it should definitely do it.
