SUPER SPONSOR

Interview with Marc Vettori
Date: July 11, 1999
Event:Fairhill Classic XC Race
Class: Senior 25 - 29
Category: Sport
Length: 23 miles
Time: 1:55 (Fastest Sport Time OVERALL was 1:53)
Conditions: Sunny and HOT - Fast hard packed course
Bike: Specialized Stumpjumper M2 1998
Editor's Note: Marc is VERY busy right now with an upcoming purchase of a house (closing later this month) and a wedding in a couple of months. It is a lot to have on your plate when trying to train for mountain bike racing. Marc is also always (as president of the Wooden Wheels Race Team) active in race team events like working on the Granogue Race. Thank you Marc for all that you do to promote the sport!! He probably would have been three minutes faster if he had time to train as much as his competitors. (Check out his answer to how much have you trained in the last two months)

MBR.com: Are you happy with your number four finish?

Marc: Yeah. I'm real happy, the Sport class is tough, it was a really tough race. It kind of broke my heart a little bit to watch the first three guys come by me on the final climb but you live and learn from every experience and hopefully it will prepare me for the next race.

MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained?

Terry: Between 7 to 8 hours a week. If it is a race week I'll back off and probably do about 6 to 7. If it's not a race week sometimes I'll get up to 9.

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race?

Marc: None whatsoever. Everything went smooth. Jon Kane keeps the bike running SMOOTH!

MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck?

Marc: Not really, I think at the beginning getting off the front early was kinda lucky, but otherwise -

MBR.com: I wouldn't call that luck.

(Mr. Vettori was first going into the singletrack)

MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish?

Marc: I felt real good, like I said, on the last climb (in my mind there were four big climbs) and the last climb was going from the river up to the concrete bridge, and on that bridge I cracked up a little. I just didn't have the power and I was doing anything I could to just get the bike moving. I just couldn't do it. The two guys that I had been riding with (we were 1st, 2nd & 3rd ) the two put a little gap on me, and Jason Cimini from Dunbars came by me and broke my heart a little. Once we got over the concrete bridge and I got some water and got to feed a little bit I felt good for the last two miles.

MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

Marc: Actually I switched from water bottles to a mini-camelback. It was going to be real hot and I knew there was a lot of singletrack so I wanted to make sure I could get enough water in me.

MBR.com: How do you rate the course?

Marc: I thought it was excellent. I thought it was awesome.

MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run?

Marc: Absolutely. The Trail Spinners always put on a great event.

MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place?

Marc: I got a Gore jacket which I gave to Mark Fitzwater (my brother).

MBR.com: If conditions are the same, could you go faster next year?

Marc: I hope so cause I hope I'm getting better. I hope everyday I ride a bike I get a little bit better at it. If I can get another good year of Cylo-cross under my belt I don't see any reason why I can't do better.
