Editor's Note: Terry dedicated this
race to Andrew Mein (who died earlier this year in a hit and run while
riding his bike home). We all miss Andrew. Andrew gave Terry the lucky
socks he wore for this race, and his suspension seatpost. Both of these
big guys with big hearts and exceptional biking skills have dedicated
their lives to bicycling. We are glad Terry is still with us - and will
always carry Andrew in our hearts. So now we know why Terry (even after
being buckled in the middle of the race) kept pushing and placed NUMBER
ONE!!

MBR.com: Are you happy with your number ONE finish? Terry: Yeah. MBR.com: In the last two months how many hours a week have you trained? Terry: Between 15 and 19. MBR.com: Did you have any unusual problems with the race? Terry: I dropped my chain on the big long downhill and I think I lost a lot of time on that. It was at the first creek crossing and I dropped it just after that and it got jammed behind the peg, and I had a little bit of trouble getting it out. The guy who was second to me told me later that his middle ring stopped working on him so he was big ringing it the whole way. I was kind of taking it easy on the downhill and I know he was hammering and he closed any gap I gained on him in that section there. He caught me right after that, about three miles from there he caught me. MBR.com: Did you have any unusual luck? Terry: The good luck I had was that I planned to ride away from the group in the beginning of the race and luck had it that the course had a nice long road section in the beginning of the race. That just worked right into my hands and I felt confident that I could get some sort of a gap and once I got out of sight that I could weasel my way away. MBR.com: When did you put the hammer down? Terry: As soon as we hit the second turn in the start, the gravel road when we started heading back towards the gravel road I attacked, and I actually missed the turn and I was going the wrong way, a little bit off the course there, so I go got back on the course and I was still in the lead and I attacked again and pulled the gap out to about 100 yards and when I crossed the bridge heading out of the training center I was about 130 yards and I just threw the hammer down there and went up that road like a madman. MBR.com: Were you strong from start to finish? |

Terry: I got
buckled in the middle, I had a bad patch in the middle, the guy caught me
just after that so I was kind of mentally down and physically down at the
same time the guy caught me and I started thinking about second place and
then I said the heck with that and I attacked again.
MBR.com: Did you do anything special to prepare for this race? Terry: Just been doing a lot of miles, you know a lot of miles, I've been trying not to ride too hard because I knew I'd have to ride hard the whole hour and a half so I've been trying not to ride with too high intensity. MBR.com: How do you rate the course? Terry: The course was outstanding. Ran into a couple of sections where dust came up and it was hard to see. That was the only thing that made it difficult in any way. MBR.com: Were you happy with the way the race was run? Terry: Yes. The only thing that screwed us up a little bit and it was, nobody was even thinking right, was they started us a couple of minutes early. Just like, five minutes early. It just meant that we ran into the other racers five minutes sooner. That's all. I don't think it would have made too much difference. MBR.com: What was your prize for First Place? Terry: I got a set of XT MBR.com: For one wheel? Terry: Yeah, it's for my unicycle, my unicycle, it's what I'm going to race next year, a unicycle. MBR.com: If conditions are the same, could you go faster next year? Terry: Yeah, what I did wrong was I ran a little bit too high a tire pressure. I could have taken out about 5 or 6 more pounds, maybe 8 more pounds and been a little faster. I was getting a lot of tire chop. You know, my tires were coming back at me when I'd go through a real fast section, rocky. |
