XC Race Bike: Not worth mentioning--I need a new bike if anyone is interested in sponsoring/donating one!
Tires: Specialized extreme control
Conditions: muddy & rooty!
Did you do anything special (apart from the whole training lifestyle) to prepare for this race?
No.
Did you like the way Guy's ran each category separately to reduce traffic due to the large turnout?
Yes, it worked out well.
Were you happy with your choice of tires?
Pretty much. The knobs are spaced out real well for mud and they are narrow but that type of mud really liked to stick no matter what you ran. It felt like riding on ice the first couple laps but the course dried out a little as the race went on.
What was your favorite part of the course?
There was one smooth, fast, twisty part that was rootless a couple miles from the start (?) that I especially liked.
Were you strong from start to finish?
I wasn't feeling very strong at all actually. No energy! So I was just riding and trying to survive.
Did you have any interesting experiences during your race (exchanges with competitors/spectators)?
Just a couple run-ins with some guy with a camera that he kept flashing in my eyes. :)
When did you put the hammer down?
I wasn't able to. I was just riding steady.
Did you have any unusual problems?
My rear derailleur is dying and got jammed into my spokes on the beginning of the 4th lap. I got it out and it still worked within a 3 gear range (which made it interesting since you had to shift a lot on that course). It bent 2 of my spokes so my rear wheel was out of true and was rubbing on my brakes. I just kept praying that my bike would last till the finish.
How would you rate the course?
Great. It was a really fun course! If there wasn't as much mud it would've been super fast.
Were you happy with the way the race was run?
Yes, I thought they did a great job.
