What do you do for cross training? (not cyclocross, but off the bike exercise)?
Nordic Ski when there is local snow. Shovel too.. Weight (gym) work some winters.
Do you take time off the bike in the winter?
A little. Cut way back for at least a few weeks.
How do you avoid weight gain in the winter?
Try not to eat as much when I'm riding/training. With that in mind - it usually leads me to get back riding to justify "pleasure eating"..I really enjoy food.
What month do you plan on coming into fitness for the 2001 season?
Summer..oh the question was month...OK,..June would be nice.
What month do you start your pre-season training?
Probably be anxious for some early races in April, so I'll try to incorporate that with my build up.
How do you deal with riding in the winter conditions (cold, snow, ice, lack of daylight)?
Dress appropriately, in layers as per conditions (weather) and expected work load of ride. I'll sometimes bring an extra undershirt in a sealed bag, so I can switch - avoid being damp and COLD. It's a lot nicer if you have a companion or more on those cold winter days to take your mind off the conditions with conversation. Fenders are a big plus if it's going to be sloppy. You may think they're "geekie", if the roads are sloppy they can make it a lot more pleasant.
What are your goals for the 2001 season?
Not going to say one or two particular goals as in a specific"event", but a goal of mine would be to refine the process of reaching a goal. In other words continue to learn more about how to obtain the maximum performance for a specific time.
Is the "pro mountain bike racer" lifestyle as much fun as you thought it would be?
I am not a "professional mountain racer"...a Road Pro...I think NOT..a Professional Cyclo-Cross racer..ahh there's something (is there such a thing here in the US?) But, yes, I do enjoy the life of an athlete very much.
