What do you do for cross training? (not cyclocross, but off the bike exercise)?

Hockey oh yeah, Canada's game. I play in a league of bike racers, a 2 hour game once a week. I cross country ski a lot, we have tons of snow this winter so its been great. I do weights twice a week, so a lot of cross training. I did my last race in Tennessee(Tour de Wolf) in Oct. and have not ridden a bike since, I will remedy that at the end of Feb. in sunny (I hope) Ga.

Do you take time off the bike in the winter?

Yes (see above).

How do you avoid weight gain in the winter?

Train well and eat properly. I always tend to gain a few pounds but it comes off easily as the big weeks of training kick in.

What month do you plan on coming into fitness for the 2001 season?

May.

What month do you start your pre-season training?

November.

How do you deal with riding in the winter conditions (cold, snow, ice, lack of daylight)?

Don't worry'bout'it! As a mountain biker I feel its not as important to ride all year, it may be different for road racers. Getting off the bike and developing other skills and muscles is great for mind and body, then I crave my bike in spring and don't burn out.

What are your goals for the 2001 season?

BIG!! They are focused on the Canada Cup series. I would like to follow up on my top 30 in a world cup last year with a few more similar rides.

Is the "pro mountain bike racer" lifestyle as much fun as you thought it would be?

I love it, you have to enjoy traveling, and not get uptight when things don't click into place. Stress not and prosper.
