What do you do for cross training? (not cyclocross, but off the bike exercise)?

I run on trails, lift weights and snowboard and shop!

Do you take time off the bike in the winter?

Yes, this year I took a full month off the bike in November and just concentrated on cross training.

How do you avoid weight gain in the winter?

I don't change anything. I have been the same weight for a long time. I just eat right all the time and I don't get cravings for junk. I think that if your body is used to being treated well, it will treat you well back.

What month do you plan on coming into fitness for the 2001 season?

Right now I am training with the Canadian team in Victoria BC. It is very easy to ride too much up here this time of year, so I have to pace myself. I am hoping to be in good form by Sea Otter in March. I don't plan to be in peak form until Big Bear in June.

What month do you start your pre-season training?

In December I get back on the bike. Mostly for fun on trails. January I break out the road bike and start putting some miles on my legs.

How do you deal with riding in the winter conditions (cold, snow, ice, lack of daylight)?

Layers. Booties. Windstopper garments. Heat Rub.

What are your goals for the 2001 season?

Podiums at NORBAS,
Top 10 in a few North American World Cups (Mont Ste. Anne).

Is the "pro mountain bike racer" lifestyle as much fun as you thought it would be?

It is fun, but it is important to remember that fun is not the ultimate goal. It is a job, and it takes a huge commitment to reach personal goals. Put it this way, I feel lucky to love my job!
