WORLD SOLO 24HRS OF ADRENALIN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002

1. When did you arrive at the event location and did you have enough time to "settle in", pre-ride the course and get comfortable with your surroundings?

I arrived the Tuesday before the race. I had plenty of time to settle in and pre-ride the course.

2. Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

I trained for this race simply by riding long distances and then tapering down, so I was well rested before the race.

3. Course conditions went from extremely dry and dusty to torrential downpours and 35mph winds. Did you expect this at all and how did you keep warm with the huge temperature drop?

No, I didn't expect the abrupt weather change at all. I took off on that lap wearing just a long sleeve t-shirt, short sleeve jersey and shorts. I didn't even have my full finger gloves on. I lost all the feeling in my hands, I had to look at my hands to see if I was pulling on the brakes. Also my legs swelled to twice the normal size after that lap from the cold.

4. Did you have a support crew?

Yes, a friend who was also in the race was there and his girlfriend did support.

5. How would you rate the course as far as technical difficulty - and were the technical sections any more difficult with the extreme rain?

I would rate this course as very difficult. The downhills gave me all I could handle. After it rained it was much more difficult, very slippery and dangerous. I felt really good out there that day and that helped a lot.

6. Which lap did you consider was the most difficult?

The most difficult lap was the daylight/storm lap. It was slippery, it was cold and I wasn't dressed right for it. I just kept thinking man I gotta get in and get some gloves.

7. To withstand such adverse conditions and persevere achieving the 24HR WORLD SOLO CHAMIPIONSHIP TITLE - what kept you going?

Gatorade, slimfast, bananas and fried chicken was my fuel. The thoughts that kept me going were; It took me until midnight to get into first place and I'll be damned if I'm gonna give it up now. Also I knew I had to keep going if I wanted to get some dry clothes.

8. How did your bike holdup for such a long race and did you ride the same one throughout the whole race?

Gatorade, slimfast, bananas and fried chicken was my fuel. The thoughts that kept me going were; It took me until midnight to get into first place and I'll be damned if I'm gonna give it up now. Also I knew I had to keep going if I wanted to get some dry clothes.

9. What do you consider to be the most important attribute for a 24 Hour Solo racer?

Eveything has to work together; food, attitude, support, bike, but, the most important I think is a positive attitude. That's what gets you through the race without losing it and taking long breaks or sleeping.

10. If you could do the race again, would you do anything differently?

The only thing I would do differently is buy a weather radio, so I know when to dress warmer.
