Robert Sauer

Did you do anything special (apart from the whole training lifestyle) to prepare for this race?

No, just the basic training.

Did you make it up all of the hills?

Yes, my climbing was very good today. I did have a few little problems and oh, yeah a crash just beyond the railroad tracks. I gave Fuzzy a real show on how I can plow my head into the ground.

What was your favorite part of the course?

The Finish Line. The single track was fun and fast and the off-camber was challenging.

Were you strong from start to finish?

No, my first lap was off a little. Bill Gentile and Fuzzy were starting to show their stuff and began to punish me. Things came together on the second time through the climbs. By the latter part of the third and final lap I started to weaken.

Did you have any interesting experiences during your race (exchanges with competitors/spectators)?

Mike Flynn of Guy's Bicycles Team yelling from on top of the stone tower hill was a major motivator. I did not want to fail the climb and disappoint him.

When did you put the hammer down?

No hammer, just a good pace and clearing all the hills.

Did you have any unusual problems?

Just the crash. I am glad Fuzzy did not get tangled in it.

Were you happy with the way the race was run?

Course conditions, registration, timing were all great.

Is there anything you would like to add?

The payouts seem to be all over the place. Don's payout at the Hibernia race is still King.
