WORLD SOLO 24HRS OF ADRENALIN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002

1. When did you arrive at the event location and did you have enough time to “settle in”, pre-ride the course and get comfortable with your surroundings?

I arrived Friday at 5pm. Only had time to ride to the beginning of the singletrack. Wasn't too worried felt I would have plenty of time to get used to the course. Our great hotel made settling in easy. Have to thank Olympia Bike and Ski in Vernon for their great suggestion.

2. Did you do anything special to prepare for this race?

I rode in two other 24 hour races to prepare

3. Course conditions went from extremely dry and dusty to torrential downpours and 35mph winds. Did you expect this at all and how did you keep warm with the huge temperature drop?

I had never ridden in rain or mud like this. I was out on the course when the hard rain started so just kept going. Never felt cold at all. I had 7 layers on the top. 2 undershirts, wool jersey, vest, windbreaker, Trilife jacket, rain jacket. Hat under helmet, lobster paws, Shebeest Knickers, rain socks, neck warmer. That was enough to keep me toasty, never hot.

4. Did you have a support crew?

My son Randy Wolfe and his wife Sheri were a fantastic support crew.

5. How would you rate the course as far as technical difficulty – and were the technical sections any more difficult with the extreme rain?

The steep downhills were very technical for me(it was fun watching others ride them-think I learned something from it) I walked the same in the day as night.

6. Which lap did you consider was the most difficult?

The last lap when I was trying to stay ahead of Debbie. She was a great racer and better on the downhills.

7. To withstand such adverse conditions and persevere achieving the 24HR WORLD SOLO CHAMIPIONSHIP TITLE – what kept you going?

I wanted the Rainbow Jersey

8. How did your bike holdup for such a long race and did you ride the same one throughout the whole race?

My Turner bike couldn't have been better. Changed one valve stem. (It always holds up)

9. What do you consider to be the most important attribute for a 24 Hour Solo racer?

Staying on the bike a full 24 hours. ( I didn't stop for more than 10 min. at a time.) Getting the right foods for you to stay energized.

10. If you could do the race again, would you do anything differently?

Not a thing. (But I know what I have to do to win next year, my work is cut out for me)
