Local heads to Netherlands for World Championships

Thompson said he does most of his training on the road, but couples road work with workouts on a "trainer" - a mechanical contraption that allows him to ride in place down in his basement. Sometimes Thompson said he'll do "interval" training which rotates long, hard riding with recovery periods. Sometimes he does sprint training which incorporates repeated and explosive bursts of speed.
Thompson also throws in some basic calisthenics - like stretching, push-ups, and sit-ups. He does very little weight lifting and eats well, but isn't overly concerned about the occasional junk food indulgence.

The Person

Justin seemed most comfortable discussing the nuances of bike riding and training. Just talking about the fun of it. He sat in a recliner chair in his living room and was eager and expressive and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.
Thompson told about how in Utah he visited the site for the 2002 Olympic winter games with some fellow bikers. They got to race their bikes on a bob sled course, he said.
