Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross CHAMPIONSHIP RACE

December 19, 1999
Fair Hill Park
Elkton, MD

The Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-cross Championship race had a good turn out Sunday at Fair Hill Park. It was a bit chilly and windy, but the racing was hot.
The course wound around the Fairgrounds, through a barn and back to the grand stands with sharp turns, fast straight-aways and five sets of barriers. A great course thanks to Dave Mandhart and the First State Velo Sport team.

The A Race

This race started out fast with Mike Yozell-Trek taking the lead early and setting the tempo. One lap into the race
Greg Ferguson-Trek got tangled up in a high set of barriers allowing Mike Yozell, Chris Eatough-Trek and
Justin Thompson-Devo to gap the rest of the field with Jeremiah Bishop -Chesapeake Wheelmen chasing.
Within two laps Jeremiah Bishop reeled in the lead group and it was Mike Yozell, Justin Thompson, Chris Eatough and Jeremiah Bishop out in front of the pack with a solid gap.
The next few laps Mike Yozell, Chris Eatough and Justin Thompson were trying to work as a team and lose Jeremiah Bishop.
With about three laps to go the pace got furious with Jeremiah Bishop and Chris Eatough cranking it up to a fever pitch. Mike Yozell fell off the pace, paying for his earlier tempo-setting and Justin Thompson settled into the "third place" mode knowing his legs were not strong enough to take on the leaders. This may be because he raced TWO races the day before in Massachusetts!
Jeremiah Bishop charged away from Chris Eatough the last couple of laps. No one was in the background when he raised his arms in victory over the finish line.

Top Five (A Race)
1. Jeremiah Bishop- Chesapeake Wheelmen
2. Chris Eatough-Trek
3. Justin Thompson-Devo
4. Mike Yozell-Trek
5. Greg Ferguson-Trek
