Race: Camp Mack, PA Date: 5/9/99
Written By: Justin Thompson
Clear skies and warm weather brought many
talented riders to the Lancaster area for the Camp Mack Cross Country
Race. The course was a very fast, rocky, technical 8 mile loop. Bone shaking
downhills and lung-busting fire road climbs made the 3 lap race very challenging.
Although this was not a race on the Team TREK calendar, dominating results
by TREK riders made this a "TREK DAY".
The Senior Expert Race showcased TREK riders
Jed Schrober and Ryan DeWalt, two of the most talented, up and coming
racers in our region. Jed rode an impressive race finishing 3rd place.
Ryan also gave a great effort finishing close behind Jed for a 4th place.
In the Expert Women's Race Tara "the jet" Keefer continued to show that
she is a force to be reckoned with by winning the women's event. Tara
has had some bad luck so far this season like being sick before Fuller
Nissan and crashing hard in North Carolina but on this day all of Tara's
hard work really paid off.
There was an unusually small Junior Expert
field at Camp Mack with there being only two juniors racing. This was
not an important factor because Jason Moore and Justin Thompson are two
of the strongest juniors in the region and often find themselves battling
it out with each other. On this day Justin was looking for a little revenge
after being beaten by Moore last week at Fairmount by a mere 11 seconds.
The race started out casually as the two were in no hurry to put the hurt
on each other. On the second major climb of the first lap Justin decided
to attack early knowing Moore is a very strong finisher. From that point
on Justin raced his own race and won by a margin of over 6 minutes. His
time would have placed him in the top five of the Senior Expert Race.
In the Pro/Expert race Greg Ferguson finished
a respectable 6th place. Although Fergie had a couple minor crashes and
used the race for training purposes he still showed his eye catching stamina.
Fergie even took the time to give Justin Thompson a water bottle exchange
lesson in the middle of the race!!!!!
