want mountain biking banned from Fairmount Park, Phila., PA |
Forwarded e-mail from Delaware Trail Spinners
February 19, 2001
Hi Everyone:
There are few matters that I want to tell you about:
1) The Fairmount Park Commissioners had a meeting yesterday to discuss
future trail usage. I was told that the Commissioners are divided on the
future use of mountain bikes in the park (half want mountain bikes banned
from the park). The Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers have gathered a
petition in which 700 people signed stating that they want mountain biking
banned from the park. Fairmount Park staff wants mountain bikers to write
letters to the following: The letters should be address to:
Fairmount Park Executive Director, William E Mifflin, Post Office Box
21601,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
19131-0901, 215-685-0112, e-mail: Bill.Mifflin@Phila.gov.
If you can
highlight the volunteer activities including the Volunteer Mountain
Patrol,
Trail Maintenance, and other examples of fostering positive
Mountain Bike use of the trails in the Park.
2) The next trailwork session in the Wissahickon will be next Saturday
at 10:00. Meet at the Bell's Mills lower parking lot (the Chestnut Hill
side). We will be finishing a trail project that was started a couple of
months ago. Other suggestions for future trailwork include the a) White
Trail behind Blue Bell Meadow; (b) White Trail leading to Indian Statute.
Fairmount Park Staff wants suggestions from other mountain bicyclists who
want to work. Please contact David Bower at 215-991-3272.
3) IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) will hold a trail
building school with classroom time and trail work time. Classes will be
held April 27th through April 29th. Locations of projects in the
Wissahickon will be around District 3 offices and W.B. Saul High School and
Andorra Natural areas.
4) Also, I am no longer will be able to maintain this e-mail list
anymore. Please let me know if you are interested in taking over this list.
There is approximately 90 people on this list. We are currently affiliated
with IMBA and dues run out at the end of April. Please let me know if you
wish to take this over. I can help in anyway I can in the transition!
Thanks! Wendy
