February 2000
Jamaica
by Mark Nickerson

I love reggae. I love going on vacation. I love to ride my bike. I love to ride my bike with Alan. So, taking my bike to Jamaica for the Second Annual Mountain Bike Festival and National Race Series seemed like a no-brainer. Weeks before we left, my mind would wander in anticipation towards lush green forest trails and teal ocean water. Blame the cold icy rides (actually calling what we were doing on Thursday nights riding is a stretch) leading up to the trip but I was even harboring a fantasy of returning the national downhill champ of Jamaica! How could I have known I was in for the worst vacation of my life? Never has my ass been so

thoroughly kicked and hung up to dry, pulled off the line and stomped for good measure. Maybe I'll blame it on Bill. Yeah, that's it, it's Bill's fault. Last spring at the Fairmount race I ran into Bill Gentile of Team Mt. Gretna fame. He had recently returned from Jamaica and was raving about the trails and the level of talent developing on the island. Wake, bake and ride was how he described his month there. The festival and race series is the brainchild of Rusty, a displaced Clevelander and most excellent mountain biker and all-around good dude. Rusty has this dream of putting Jamaica on the mtb map both as a
great place to ride and future Olympic contenders.
