Michaux Lives 2001
Race Report
Chris Eatough - TREK/VW East Coast Factory Team |
Date: 4/22/01
It was a beautiful weekend up at Michaux State Forest for the Trek/VW East
Coast Factory Mountain Bike Racing Team's season kickoff. Some racer's might
have even found the heat to be a bit too much, especially up the 1200 foot "Dead
Woman's Hollow" fireroad climb at the midpoint of the 25 mile race. I was
definitely thankful for my Platypus Hydration pack filled with icy water whilst
dicing for the lead up the exposed climb. Unfortunately, soon after, my Michaux
bad luck struck yet again, and I flatted on "Rattlesnake Ridge", and
with Jerimiah Bishop riding strongly at the front, there was no way to make
up the time, and I had to settle for second place. My teammates, Paul Buschi
and David Duvall followed me in, ensuring Trek boys held 3 out of the top 4
spots. We were even more dominating in the women's race, thanks to Sue Haywood
and Katie Compton, who hammered to first and second respectively.
Thanks to Gettysburg Cycle and Fitness for picking up the Michaux tradition
and making this edition of the classic race one of the best ever.
Also, thanks to team boss, Ernie Martin, for the thousands of roles he plays
out to get us to the races, as well as team manager, Roger Bird, and mechanic
John Posner. It was great to have the team all together again, and I'm looking
forward to more good times throughout the season.
