INTERVIEWS

Race notes:
Beautiful weather and a fast, mildly rolling course made for another great Mid-Atlantic Super Series race.

No Cents Racing (Chris Hinman and crew) who regularly maintain the Glouchester County College area trails did a wonderful job preparing the race course and ran a very well organized race.

After running around snapping pics all day I found out later that about half of the pictures were lost due to improper auto-focusing caused by the heat. New camera(s) on the way that will be designed for still pics only featuring much higher resolution and printable crystal clear pics. I've also got a tent on the way and plan to setup to sell pictures at the races and online to help support this site.

There was a short steep hill close to the finish line that made for great spectating and it was fun to watch the crowd cheering and yelling (I think some used a bullhorn and cowbells) for the racer(s) to climb the hill.

Now here's an interesting excerpt from Brandon Draugelis - First Place Expert Junior "I had to duck someone's front wheel that turned around with their bike standing on their rear wheel."

There have been some reports of "race rage" and I find this disappointing. Please let's not bring that kind of behavior into the mtn bike racing arena. Be good sportspeople and let's all just have FUN!!!

The First of the Season -
A Picture Perfect Day
June 2, 2002
by Jill Wiest

Picture it - a perfect Mid-Atlantic Series Mountain Bike race: 81 degrees, low humidity, sunny skies, a nice breeze, a dry course and a snaky, swervy piece of 5-mile single-track that was nothing short of "a riot!" The perfect day finally came in Sewell, New Jersey at the No Cents Summer Sizzler and racers and race fans came out in numbers to enjoy the spectacular conditions.

On just a couple of acres at Gloucester County College, a superb course was laid out with bunches of short, quick ups, twisty fast turns, heart-stopping down hills, log piles, water bars, and only a little climbing that momentum did its job on most of the time. A racer's dream course, right? The promise was, this course would beat you up - and they lived up to that promise. During the course pre-ride, some folks said, "How could this beat you up…there are no rock gardens, no difficult log jumps, drop-offs, or long, steep, climbs to endure? I don't get it?" That was the pre-ride. At race pace, the single-track beast came out with whip in hand. It was way too easy to be Tinker and push those big gears, only to find the old quads a hurting and the beating starting. And while the whipping was going on, you couldn't let your guard down for a moment - the competition was tight in all classes and divisions. Short, fast courses make for fierce contests, battling for top spots throughout the entire race. Passing? The 25 ft section of flat logs was a good spot - especially if you had your fill of mud at Blue Marsh and Hershey and refused to replace yet another set of brake pads while going through the muddy section next to the logs. Inside/outside turns, short climbs where some lost their momentum, and a couple split trail sections gave you several options to put the hammer down and pass. And if you didn't take your chance there, the organizers cleared just enough brush from the sides that passing on the single-track was not impossible. Tree roots were minor at race pace.

Mud, rain, and cold weather won't keep us away; but sunshine, fun courses and warm temps certainly psyche the racing spirit and keep us coming back for more. Thanks to Don, Bill, and Danzeisen & Quigley for yet another memorable race.

What's in a number?
June 2, 2002
by Paul Inglis

I just did the "No Cents" Mtn bike race in Sewell NJ. Although I've done over 20 races this year, this is my first mountain bike race. I pick up my number, Beginners/Vet are 600 series. At the start I'm in 6th place, which is important on this course as it is technical and has lots of single track. During the first lap I work my way through the slower riders from the other fields and some of the riders from my field, initially I'm in the 3rd spot and right on the wheel of the riders in 1st & 2nd. This is a great start for me and I'm still fellin' good as I finish lap one.

My troubles start in the middle of lap two. My front wheel is loosing air, slowly. I figure with the lead I have I can finish before it goes flat, and maybe hold on to 3rd place. I was coming out of the snaking section when I hear a "snap"! My seat clamp bolt has broken. I figure I'm about 2-3 miles from the finish....I can finish without a seat....as long as my tire doesn't get any softter. It does! I'm washing out on every turn, and God knows there are a plenty of turns on this course. Making the problem worse is that my rear brake is not working, which means I have to rely on my front break to trim my speed, in the turns, with a flat front tire, and no seat. I wash out on a right hand turn. It's amazing how easy it is to jump off a bike that has no seat post!. After retrieving my bike from the side of the course, I press on.

With less than a mile to go, I just want to finish. Within moments of starting again I round a bend and drift too far right, catching a tree with my handle bar. Endo! When I remount, I find that my left break lever (front break in now gone) has broken clear off! OK, I paid $25 to come out here and have some FUN and that's what I'm gonna do. No front break, no back break, no seat, a flat front tire. Although my cranks are making some weird noise I figure there's nothing left to break, so I continue on, and finish! Now that was FUN. As I was telling this story to some friends from the Wooden Wheels team, one of them looked at my bike and said, "Dude, your race number is 666" and they all started to laugh!
