Race notes:

Here's a problem that some of our more attractive male racers have: (excerpt from Jim Holeva - BIKE HUB interview) Did you have any interesting experiences during your race (exchanges with competitors/spectators)? Nothing out of the ordinary, just had a lot of ladies checking me out as always.

If you thought that NO ONE made it up that very steep hill while racing....... Chris Kuhl - Gettysburg Bicycle excerpt: Did you climb the steep uphill on any laps? On Second one I made it up but that was it, the rest I had to hike it.

SUBARU FALL CLASSIC
September 9 , 2001

Guy's Bicycles brought us another well run event with the Subaru Fall Classic, mountainbikeRACER.com Mid-Atltantic Super Series #9. Although rain was in the forecast earlier in the week mostly sunny skies was the order of the day.

The course was challenging with a couple of loose, technical downhills, numerous logs and bridges plus a very steep hill that very few racers were able to climb.

At the end of the day Guy's Bicycles - Phila, PA stopped the erosion of it's lead as number one team and defeated Wooden Wheels - Newark, DE by just 31 points. Guy's Bicycles now has a total of 3,760 team points with Wooden Wheels in second place with 3,609. The top 5 teams:

Guy's Bicycles - 3,760
Wooden Wheels - 3,609
Wissahickon Cyclery - 3,118
Team Harrisburg - 2,970
First State Velo Sport - 2,752

Series points leader Jason Moore - Moore's/Reinhardt was the fastest racer overall. After winning a 22 mile mountain bike race (with 4 hours driving time each way) on Saturday he continued his winning ways clocking in at 1:39:46 for four laps.

Brandon Ott - Tailwinds was second overall just 11 seconds back at 1:39:57. Brandon had his best Super Series Pro finish with this race. Jay Duffy - Speedgoat.com also did the 22 mile mtn bike race on Saturday finishing a very respectable third place overall at 1:42:09. Mike Yozell - Guy's Bicycles was a close fourth in the Pro Men at 1:42:27 and the incredible Scott Henry - Team Harrisburg fifth at 1:44:06. Scott is an inspiration being 36 yrs old and racing with the FASTEST (Pro/Expert 19-26) class!

Les Leach - Guy's Bicycles moved up in the overall rankings placing 1st Place Expert Men Senior 19-26. Ransom Weaver - Guy's Bicycles did a little less rowing lately and ran a very strong race placing first in the Expert Men Senior 27-34 group. Another significant Guy's Bicycles victory was delivered by Bart Passanante finishing up first place Expert Men Veteran 35-44.

Chris Kuhl - Gettysburg Bicycle may have been the only racer to actually ride that very steep climb the second lap earning a 1st Place Expert Junior Men finish with a lead of very close to ten minutes. Joey Thomspon - Wooden Wheels had a very respectable 2nd Place Expert Junior finish recently moving up from Sport.

In the Expert Men Master 45 + race Mike Connair took first with a commanding nine minute lead. Bill Gentile - Wooden Wheels battled sickness the night before the race but kept it together enough for a second place finish. Mark Nickerson - Wooden Wheels who was having a great race ran into serious trouble with a flat tire. He managed to get enough air in his tube to finish in 3rd place. Robert Sauer - Guy's Bicycles had some terrible luck flatting not once but twice unfortunately having to DNF.

1st place Overall Women Karen Henry - Team Harrisburg has tapped into that "Henry's secret formula" that causes mountain bike racers with the Henry last name to be unusually fast. Claiming that she was feeling tired from a hard ride a couple of days before the race, Karen proceeded to run a very strong race. Karen who is an Expert Vet/Master 30+ was nine minutes faster than the first place Senior 29under Women Theresa Richardson - Trek/Bike Doctor and eleven and a half minutes faster than second place Expert Vet/Master Lauri Webber - Wooden Wheels (who hasn't been able to get a deep breath for quite a while due to injured ribs). Josie Shew - FSVS (click for exclusive photo) finished second place Expert Senior 29under after moving up from Sport.

Ron Ferrizzi - Guy's Bicycles placed first in the Sport Men Senior 27-34 group being the fastest Sport rider overall. Tom Dopkin took home his third first place Super Series win in the Sport Men Senior 19-26 class. David Clark - Team Harrisburg placed first in the Sport Men Veteran class with Mike Flynn - Guy's Bicycle and one of the main organizers of Guy's races coming in second. It's very difficult to run a race plus race it and do well....... way to go Mike!

Pete Carolan - Team Shox went hard for the first two laps then very hard for the third and final lap placing first in the Sport Men Junior race. Chuck Zimmerman won the Sport Men Master 45-49 race and Andrew McDermott - Wooden Wheels earned his seventh first place Super Series win in the Sport Men Master 50+ group.

Series points leader Caitlyn Tuel - Shirk's Bikes has had a great year and won first place in a Super Series race for the sixth time. The number two ranked Super Series Sport Women Senior 29under Nicole Kowal - FSVS finished second earning some quality points for First State Velo Sport - Wilmington, DE. Lisa Viable - FSVS brought home another first place and was only a little over a minute behind Caitlyn.
