The 2004 Escape from Granogue - Race #2 of
the Classic Series presented by TREK was a smashing success. Team
Wooden Wheels Racing did a phenomenal job organizing this unique
race that is only possible thanks to the kindness of Mr. & Mrs.
Irenee duPont Jr. and Mr. & Mrs.
Philip B. Weymouth Jr. who graciously allow the use of their private
property.
John
Thompson, Craig Shaffer, Lyn Shaffer, Lauri Webber, Buddy Briggs,
Andrew McDermott, Chris Vann and the rest of this dedicated team
pulled off a picture perfect race from start to finish. Electronic
Timing by Millennium Sports with Bob Duppstadt Jr. at the helm was
a great addition to an already excellent event.
Complete results were available the night of the race. The trails
were in great shape thanks to constant grooming by the team.
Bridges had to be built, and trees cut out of the way........ no
problem for Wooden Wheels Racing. The trails were well marked and
all dangerous spots had course marshals warning the racers. There
were food vendors, a DJ/announcer, raffles, water stations, kid's
races and towards the end of the day a parade of beautiful horse
drawn carriages that looked to be out of the early 1900s or late
1800s. Quite a show........... this along with racing by the water
tower, through the stone tunnel, and along the Brandywine river all
made for a truly "classic" event.
Although
the scenery was beautiful it must be said....... this course may
be the most challenging in the state. There was a need to have your
full attention on the smallest details of singletrack thanks to a
bit of rain in the morning during the Beginner race. It made for
very slick conditions where log crossings and wooden bridges mixed
with mud lay in wait. Power and skill were necessary to
maneuver this course on race day. The brave souls who had raced Michaux
Maximus - Classic Series by Trek race #1 last week deserve extra
credit for not having that much time to recover. Climbing is key
to this course, however you must be able to descend and power along
in the flatter sections too. I guess you can call it an all around
taxing course that is actually 100 percent ridable................
Then there are those crazies with no gears........... how do they
pull it off at Granogue with those climbs? What team
had the most bikes racing with no gears??? Wooden Wheels Racing..........
go figure.
