The forecast for the day was 40 percent chance of rain towards "sunset"
and temperatures in the 60s. It looked like it was going to rain
most of the morning. At around 9:45 am it started and by the main
10am start it was COLD (felt like winter time) and raining hard.
That didn't stop close to 500 hard core mtb racers from working
their way up the one mile road climb start, turning right on the
short lived fire road then a quick couple of turns into the first
set of rocks and roots. Most of them were smiling when they came
by.
In the men's Pro race (combined with Experts)
it was all about TREK. Three highly skilled mtb bikers swept
the podium. Chris Eatough - TREK East Coast took top honors this
year making it
two consecutive wins. Last
year he beat teammate Jeremiah Bishop who was chosen to represent
the United States at the 2004 Pan American Championships in Baños, Ecuador April 22-25.
Chris is an incredible racer who can go fast and win shorter races
plus keep going fast as long as necessary. He
is the reigning 24hrs of Adrenalin WORLD CHAMPION and has held the
title for the last FOUR YEARS! Perhaps he wanted to show off for
his fiance, Allison. Todd Helmick - TREK East
Coast was second. He had been nursing a minor leg strain the last
few weeks however, in his interview he said he "amped
it up" on
the fire road leading to rattlesnake ridge. That is a very steep
climb..........so I guess we can assume he is fully recovered. David
Duvall - TREK East Coast came in third. This guy just keeps going
year after year. Third overall is an incredible accomplishment
for a guy who would qualify for Clydesdale! In typical Duvall modesty,
he claims it was really the great bike he rode....... here's an excerpt
from his interview: Did
you have any unusual problems? No problems. I was riding
the absolute best bike for this race, the Liquid. It performed flawlessly.
Theresa Richardson - Cannondale took first place
Overall & Pro Women. After doing an endo while mixing
it up with the Vet Men in the first part of singletrack in the pouring
rain, Theresa kept her cool and rode a smooth race, cranking up the
tension at the end to hold her position. Trish Stevenson placed second
Pro Women, and Lacey Gonzalez - Shirk's was third.
Cheryl Sornson - Gettysburg Bicycle was 1st Place
Expert Women 34 &under,
Amber Itle - UPenn who rode with Karen Henry in
parts of the race placed second and Sue George came in third.
In the competitive Expert Women 35+ the infamous
Karen Henry - Team Harrisburg pulled off yet another win. Karen showed
that she has the power and technical ability to master the
most challenging situations by winning this race. The number two
finisher in this field was the equally amazing Lauri Webber - Ind
Fabrication. After crashing so hard she thought she would have to
walk her way out of the race, she realized after a few minutes that
she better get back on the bike and try to pedal. Blood oozing from
her knee she still managed to ride through the pain and finished
up second. The "amazing" part
comes with the fact that she was riding a SINGLE SPEED!! Susan
Musante finished
third.
