The D&Q Summer Sizzler - Race #3 of
the Classic Series presented by TREK was a race to remember. The
"No Cents Racing" team did a great job promoting this
race held on Gloucester Community College land. Chris Hinman -
No Cents Racing and crew have honed these trials for years into
one of the most fun, fast courses in the region. Many thanks to
these dedicated group of trail builders for a job well done year
after year. The title sponsor for this race was D&Q (Danzeisen & Quigley 1720
East Route 70, Cherry Hill, New Jersey) who provide numerous
prizes and year round support for the team. I needed to borrow
a forgotten helmet for my helper and Joe Vitalli (one of the owners
of D&Q) provided one within 30 seconds! Thank you Joe and please
support this generous sponsor whenever you can. Also, thank you
to Tom Kendall of the Gloucester Co. College Grounds Crew for all
of his assistance. Thank you Roger Bird of Trek for providing those
cool mtn bike trophies to the top three riders in every class including
Pro and Expert men and women.
The
weather threatened rain on Saturday the day before the race however
not a drop fell on the course. There
were cool ramps over man made log crossings, a few narrow bridges
and shallow water crossings. You've got to ride
this course to enjoy it's unique nature......... it's almost like
a mildly sandy water slide with cool curves, mild climbs and surprises
around almost every corner. One fun innovation were course markings
that simultaneously pointed left and right where there were short
digressions from one lane of singletrack to two that converged back
into one within 30 yards. Another neat feature was a long narrow
bridge that the Expert/Pros would probably have no problem negotiating,
however under race conditions the promoters wisely chose to add an
additional mandatory dismount as in the center of the bridge it may
have been about a six or seven foot drop. It made for a unique crossing
and fun pictures. It took a lot of work to build obstacles and lay
out the trail with just the right amount of "curve" in
the turns.
Results went smoothly thanks to accurate
electronic timing provided by Millennium Sports. Doug the bike race
MC did a great job adding to the carnival atmosphere with
his race announcing skills and music.
Beginner Race
The
Beginner race was the first to go at 9:00am. 1st
Place Beginner Women 34 &under was won hands down by a hard driving
Andrea Walheim. She's pictured in the left column in the pink dress.
While snapping pictures near the ramped up man made log crossing
I heard a short "aaahhh" and looked up from the camera to see a women
doing an endo after completely missing the down side of the ramp.
It was none other than our fearless 34 &under red headed leader who
quickly jumped back on the bike and took off with the fury of Bruce
Lee. She was focused on chasing down Barb Schultz - Action Wheels
the Beg Women 35+ winner who just got around her after the spill.
These two kept at it the whole race with Andrea in the lead most
of the time making a final push at the end of the race to take the
Overall Beginner Women win by just 18 seconds! Shannon
McCulloch - Yellow Breeches Racing came in second 34 &under 11:39
back with Colleen Merritt - First State Velo Sport about a minute
behind 2nd place. Kelly Colgan won second place Beg Women 35+.
